چکیده

MEMS-based storage devices should be energy efficient for deployment in mobile systems. Since MEMS-based storage devices have a moving media sled, they should be shut down during periods of inactivity. However, shutdown costs energy, limiting the applicability of aggressive shutdown decisions. The media sled in MEMS-based storage devices is suspended by springs. We introduce a policy that exploits the spring structure to reduce the shutdown energy. As a result, the aggressiveness of the shutdown decisions can be increased, reducing the energy consumption. This report devises analytical models of the shutdown time and energy of this policy.

Exploiting the Spring Structure of MEMS-Based Storage Devices to Reduce Their Shutdown Energy

New storage devices based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) have been proposed [3]. Enabled by high storage densities (> 1 Tb/in), MEMS technology promises to deliver small-form factor, high-capacity, and low-power storage devices. These devices have potentially low cost, because they can be manufactured using batch MEMS fabrication technology. A MEMS-based storage device dissipates an...

MEMS-based Storage Devices and Standard Disk Interfaces: A Square Peg in a Round Hole?

MEMS-based storage devices are a new technology that is significantly different from both disk drives and semiconductor memories. These differences motivate the question of whether they need new abstractions to be utilized by systems, or if existing abstractions will work well. This paper addresses this question by examining the fundamental reasons that the abstraction works for existing system...

An Analytical Solution to a MEMS Seek Time Model

The huge disparity between memory access times and disk access times has been the subject of extensive research. CPU speed has been increasing rapidly but disk access latency has lagged behind—disk transfer rates have been increasing at 40% per year, while seek times and rotational latency have been increasing at less than 10% per year [4]. This disparity has created a performance bottleneck in...

Zone-Based Shortest Positioning Time First Scheduling for MEMS-Based Storage Devices

Access latency to secondary storage devices is frequently a limiting factor in computer system performance. New storage technologies promise to provide greater storage densities at lower latencies that is currently obtainable with hard disk drives. MEMS-based storage devices [1, 11, 20] use orthogonal magnetic or physical recording techniques and thousands of simultaneously active MEMS-based re...

MEMS-Based Storage Devices and Standard Disk Interfaces: A Square Peg in a Round Hole? (CMU-PDL-03-102)

MEMS-based storage devices (MEMStores) are significantly different from both disk drives and semiconductor memories. The differences motivate the question of whether they need new abstractions to be utilized by systems, or if existing abstractions will be sufficient. This paper addresses this question by examining the fundamental reasons that the abstraction works for existing devices, and by s...
